Hello, is this USPTO? I'd like to file a trademark: Our lifestyles won't fund themselves.
There's this joke often told in senior secondary classes: Our parents recognise 4 career choices. You're either a doctor or a lawyer. An engineer or a disgrace.
This is scary because a lump and half of Nigerians don't understand how insecure these professions will be in a few years. Imagine being redundant in a career you don't like.
You might not know this, but I find your pieces rather insightful. Could you say a little more on sticking to the path(s) when we've decided to follow it (them)?
You see, some people(not me🙈) might find a career with all three but could blow it because we either lose focus or interest.
I've (on their behalf, because again... not me) been told past and new interests with their knowledge all tie up at some point in our lives.
But then, this just sounds like an excuse to keep sailing through possibilities while abandoning ones life to fate.
I don't think we need to stick to one path. Like humans, life itself is in a constant state of flux. We shouldn't feel any pressure to stick to one think. If one path isn't working, we should feel free enough to switch to the next thing.
Locking ourselves down to a single path, even when things aren't exactly working well on that path is its own kind of prison.
I hear you though about feeling like a jellyfish just going with the currents. But what is life if not an adventure? Some people have more predictability within their adventure while others don't. Different strokes for different folks. Identify what works for you and be authentic to that.
Hey, I noticed that you wrote about “a” career. What’s your opinion on having multiple careers? Like 2 full-time-ish jobs not a side hustle? As I was reading through the paths, I think I identified with two of them but each with a different career idea in mind. Do you think it’s possible or doing too much?
That just sounds so stressful haha. Tbh my thinking hasn't evolved to the level of including multiple careers. But I think what's important is that if you have multiple paths you're taking for your different careers, you have clarity on the larger thing you're working towards; whatever it is. Otherwise, you'll end up juggling what may feel like competing priorities. I imagine that that can be very anxiety-inducing.
Love how you articulated this. My current career path currently straddles 1 and 3 with an acknowledgement towards 2.
One of the ways I’ve been able to truly figure out what path I want to pursue is asking myself “what kind of problems do I want to be thinking about and solving everyday?” And even more tangibly, “do those give energy and are they tied to my higher calling in life?” Because for every job/career, there is are problems you are thinking about daily, and it’s important to ensure that it’s not in direct opposition to what you want to do even though it’s in the same industry.
For instance: as a receptionist, you are thinking about ways to make your supervisors job easier and more organized, and as an engineer, you could be thinking about the specific design modifications you need to make to ensure that your device/process does what it is intended to do. Either way, this is important to consider because say you are working broadly in the humanitarian sphere which could be considered path 3, your daily activities could directly contradict your path 1 (i.e. what you are good at) if your actual job role wasn’t aligned.
Haha! I’ve been thinking about this a lot in terms of my career goals and this article was really insightful and has given me more nuggets to chew on. Thanks Arinze! Your writing = your path 1?😉
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this, Somto.
I think those questions you're asking yourself are the ones I ask myself too, except the second question is more about 'meaning' than about 'higher calling' cos I haven't yet figured out what the latter is lol.

I see you. Thanks, x.
